How to Recover After a Hurricane: A Step-by-Step Guide for Overcoming Overwhelming Challenges

Recovering after a hurricane can feel overwhelming, but taking it step by step helps! Here are some tips to guide you through the process:

  1. Check for Hazards First – Before you do anything, make sure your home is safe. Look for downed power lines, gas leaks, or structural damage. If you're unsure, don’t enter until it's been inspected.

  2. Document Damage – Take clear photos and videos of any damage to your home or property for insurance claims. Be thorough!

  3. Contact Your Insurance Company – Report the damage to your insurance as soon as possible. Be sure to keep a copy of all your correspondence.

  4. Use Your Gas Generator Safely – If you’re using a gas generator, place it outside, far away from windows, doors, or vents to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Never run it indoors, in a garage, or enclosed space. Make sure it’s properly ventilated and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to keep your family safe.

  5. Stay Safe During Clean-Up – Wear gloves, masks, and sturdy shoes/boots when cleaning up debris. Floodwater could be contaminated, so avoid direct contact whenever possible.

  6. Be Mindful of Mold – Mold can grow quickly after a storm, especially in damp areas. Remove wet items and start drying out your home right away.

  7. Watch Out for Scams – Unfortunately, post-disaster scams are common. Hire only licensed, reputable contractors to help with repairs.

  8. Donate Thoughtfully – If you're looking to help others, consider donating to trusted relief organizations. Monetary donations are often the most helpful, as they allow groups to purchase exactly what's needed in disaster-stricken areas.  Always check to see what your specific organization is seeking before you send items.

  9. Take Care of Your Mental Health – Recovering from a hurricane can be stressful. Make time to rest and talk with friends or loved ones if you need support.  Don’t hesitate to call the Disaster Distress Hotline at  1-800-985-5990.

  10. Help Your Neighbors – If you're able, check in on neighbors, especially those who are elderly or disabled, and offer assistance.

Create a Plan for Future Storms – Once things settle, take time to review your hurricane preparedness. Restock your emergency supplies, repair weak spots in your home, and make a solid evacuation plan so you’re even more prepared next time.
